Key West, Florida

The End of the Road Literally

Coming to the end of the road might be an everyday occurrence for you; the cul-de-sac in front of your apartment building or the dead-end street leading toward your dorm. The ends of these roads are boring and familiar. It is time you discovered the literal end of the road by taking a trip to Key West, Florida.

Destination: Paradise

For those of us fortunate enough to have visited the Florida Keys, no description of their beauty is necessary. For anyone who has not seen the Keys, get ready for a slice of tropical paradise that is closer than you think.

Overview

Key West, FL
United States
24° 33' 39.7656" N, 81° 46' 44.184" W

Key West offers a wide range of places you can stay.  You should first decide on where you want to stay (i.e. do you want to be able to walk to the beach or Duval Street).  There are plenty of hotels and condos near all the main tourist spots, but keep in mind that you probably won’t be within walking distance of everything.

Go Fishing

Is also a good way to spend a day.  While deep sea fishing is available, much of the water around Key West is shallow, and these flats offer a great alternative to deep sea fishing.  There is no shortage of charter boats on the island ready to take you fishing.  If you are trying to save some money, it might be worth looking into chartering a boat out of one of the other islands near Key West.

Snorkel or Scuba

The Keys are known for their great coral reefs.  If you are certified to scuba dive, you should look into taking a trip one day.  If not, snorkeling is fun way to get out and see the reefs.  Many companies offer day trips for either snorkeling or scuba diving, and no trip to the Keys would be complete without one.

Southernmost Point

Located at Corner of Whitehead and South Streets. The southernmost point in the continental USA. It is definitely a must stop if you are in Key West. It is one of those, "well, that's it....cool...well let's go back to drink now!" kind of places

Rent a Scooter

There are tons of companies in Key West that will rent you a scooter for $30-50. Since Key West is so small this is the perfect way to get around. You can go to the beach or drive around the whole town in just a few minutes. This is a great way to spend one day during your week and really get a feel for this unique destination.

Smathers Beach

Smathers Beach is the main beach at Key West, but don’t get too excited about it because it is nothing like the white sandy beaches in other parts of Florida.  It is not that pretty, and the water can be full of seaweed.  You should definitely go check it out, but you might have a better time hanging out by the pool at your hotel.

Mallory Square Sunset Festival

Every day at sunset, there is a festival at Mallory Square and the surrounding piers.  You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO GO! This is by far the most interesting and unique thing on Key West.  It is really more of a freak show than anything, but it is the most entertaining thing you will see all week.

  • Overview

Key West is one of the coolest destinations in the U.S. I would credit to being one of the few places where you feel like you aren’t even in the U.S., but still have the benefit of being here. Key West is wild, and it really feels like it is still run by pirates instead of the U.S. You can walk around the streets with a beer, yell, and practically fight without getting in Pollock in Key Westtrouble. It has the most layed back, anything goes, vibe of anyplace I’ve visited in the country. For those reasons it is an awesome Spring Break destination that thousands of students travel to every year.

    Travel

Key West has a small airport on the island which the major carriers fly to, but these flights often tend to be pricey.  Another cheaper option is to fly to Miami or Fort Lauderdale and rent a car to drive to Key West.  The drive is about 3-3.5 hours, but it goes from island to island along the keys and is very scenic.  This is actually a great option because it allows you to have a car the whole time you are on the island.  There are also shuttle Southern Most Point in Key Westservices that can take you from the Miami airport to Key West and back.

    Getting Around

Even though the island is fairly small, everything is pretty spread out.  You probably won’t be staying close enough to walk to the beach, and if you are, then Duval Street might be far away.  Having a car is very worthwhile because it gives you the ability to go where you want without relying on taxis for everything.  If you don’t have a car, then scooters are another popular option.  Lots of people rent scooters, and you can find rental companies everywhere.  Bicycles can also be easily rented.  Taxi service is very efficient in Key West.  On Duval Street, they are easy to hail, and they are quick to pick you up if you call.
