Savannah, GA

St' Patty's Day in Savannah

Although Savannah is an old Southern town, the city knows how to let loose, as many visitors have discovered during the St. Patrick’s Day  that take place each year drawing in millions, including an annual festival and parade. The laid back attitude of Savannah also means that the city does not adhere to strict regulations. The city upholds its reputation for Southern hospitality with special “To go cups” available upon requested at various bars and restaurants, much like New Orleans’ Bourbon Street.

The Best of the Rest

If you happen to be one who likes a good piano bar, you won’t find one better than Savannah Smiles, located close to River Street, but up the stairs towards downtown. Bring plenty of cash for tips, and you can pretty much get them to play anything you want – be careful though, they wisely take advantage of drunken school pride and will orchestrate a bidding war for which fight song they play.

Downtown

Most of the students from the four area “universities” will be partying downtown. (As a side note: there is a huge military population in Savannah who like to frequent the downtown area also, so watch out who you mouth off to or you might wind up with a boot in your ass.) Murphy’s Law is a great Irish Pub with good music nightly. The owners and bartenders up there take their jobs seriously and will go shot for shot with you. If you’re lucky enough to be up there on a night when local favorites The Train Wrecks are playing a show, you’re in for a good time.

River Street

River street mostly caters to the tourist and family crowd, but isn’t a bad place to start out. There are plenty of places to get good seafood and booze – a winning combination, with Fiddler’s and Spanky’s being a few of our favorites. Get “The Platter” at Fiddler’s and you can gorge yourself on every shellfish imaginable served on a table-sized metal plate. Most places will have live music nightly, but for the most part the good stuff gets going a little later up the stairs in the Downtown district.

Ahh River Street

Savannah is a great place to go if you’ve never been. A town that is as full of history as it is bars, you’re sure to find a few places to get into trouble. There are pretty much three distinct areas, each with their own unique appeal.  You have River Street, whose cobblestones play host to the famous Mardi Gras-esque St. Patrick’s day celebration each year. From there, head up any of a number of steep stone staircases to the downtown area, one of the largest designated historic districts in the country.

Shopping in Savannah, GA

Mirrored after the port city of Charleston, South Carolina, the city of Savannah, Georgia embodies a combination of the Old and the New South. With live oak trees draped in hanging Spanish moss, and magnolia and dogwood trees on every corner, Savannah has all the charm of a quaint Southern town. However, there is plenty to be seen and done in this city, including anything from visiting art studios, eating at an outdoor café, shopping, or partying the night away.
