The university is consistently ranked among the top public schools in the U.S. with seven of its doctoral programs ranked in 2008 in the top 10 in the nation and 22 departments in their respective top 25 rankings.
One of the university's most visible features is the 307-foot tower that was completed in 1937. The tower usually appears illuminated in white light in the evening but is lit orange for various special occasions, including athletic victories and academic accomplishments. At the top of the tower is a carillon of 56 bells, the largest in Texas. The tower was the scene in 1966 of the Whitman Massacre. An observation deck is now open to the public for weekend tours.
