SaltLick BBQ - Using open smoke pits and local salt from the area, this place is 25 minutes from downtown but is always packed with young longhorns doing the “Family style” - All you can eat platters. The BBQ here is true Texas BBQ and probably the best in the state of TX.

Rudy’s BBQ - Coined the worst BBQ in the world, is quick and damn good. Get the Extra-Moist and outside cut of the brisket.

Lady Bird Lake

Outdoor lovers need to go down to Lady Bird Lake, named after President Johnson's wife, and rent a kayak for an hour. It's a great way to see the city from the water and get some exercise. You can even paddle to the Congress St bridge at sunset to watch one of the largest colonies of bats in North America fly out from their underbridge slumber.

The University of Texas at Austin (often referred to as the University of Texas, UT Austin, UT, or Texas) is a  public research university located in Austin, Texas.  The main campus is located less than a mile from the Capitol of the State of Texas.  Founded in 1883, the university is one of the largest enrollments on a single-campus  with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 16,500 faculty and staff.

Places to stay

Hotels are not cheap in Austin. As a centralized city, if you want to find somewhere you can walk or cab to from a night out drinking, get someplace within a few miles of downtown or close to the UT campus.  Hotel San Jose is a hidden gem if you can book a room! Make sure you reserve before you go.

Texas Football & Tailgating! - The Longhorns are always doing well so tickets are tough to come by but still possible. Check eBay and Stub Hub. If you walk to Martin Luther King Dr you can grab some tried and true Texas BBQ at one of the parking lots tailgaters have overtaken. Once inside enjoy the entertainment of the game, the great food, and lots of burnt orange.

Staying Active in Austin, Texas

In most cities, the winter makes it difficult to stay active.  However, in Austin it’s the summer heat that can make activity unpleasant.  Austinites have adapted to this challenge and have created a city where people are active all year round.  TOWNLAKE The hub of activity in downtown Austin is Townlake.
